Design and Build

At Good Steward Ecoscapes, our passion is converting existing landscaping into an oasis for wildlife. Our eco-friendly approach focuses on providing habitat, a food source, and a source of naturally filtered drinking water for wildlife.

Every property, yard, home, and homeowners are unique so our design process involves visiting your property and discussing with your your wants, needs, and desires with your landscaping and how we can both attract and support local indigenous wildlife. Our goal is for
every yard we service to qualify to be a certified wildlife habitat with our non-profit partners at the Conservation Foundation. Our designs are custom to suit the homeowners needs, wants, and desires for their backyard living space.

Our specialty is in the use of native plants to feed local wildlife, and installation of a naturally-filtered water source for wildlife to use as drinking water or bathing. We refrain from the use of unnecessary foreign, non-native plants as they do not support the local ecosystem, exceptions may include a known, non-invasive plant for nostalgic purposes. We install our designs using primarily plants grown in plugs or pots, this helps us control the "formality" of the design and ensures the living plant stands a fighting chance against hungry rabbits. Using seed mixes results in more "wild" looks and may be confusing for homeowners; also, there is a higher risk your plants will be eaten and will not survive. We will only use seed for restorations 1/4 acre and larger; however, we will still recommend using individual plants as an accent or addition to the seed mix.

With landscape design and installation from Good Steward Ecoscapes, you will enjoy the sites and sounds of wildlife in your own backyard. Join the movement, take part in "Backyard Conservation", and support wildlife today! See below for our landscaping and aquascaping options. We charge $350 for our design consultation; if you hire us for the installation we put that towards the cost of the project.

Butterfly Garden

Butterfly gardens are designed specifically to support butterflies and moths. Butterflies require specific plants in their larval stage or mothers will not lay eggs. Butterflies also feed on certain plants as adults. Our designs will take these qualities into consideration. If you want to specifically support monarchs, swallowtails, or fritillaries this is the best option for you!

Bird Garden

Birds gardens are designed with our feathered friends in mind. No garden for birds is complete without a habitat source, or a "bird bath". Not only will we use plants known for birds to eat from, we will also select plants their insect prey can live off as well. We will also include some sort of naturally-filtered water feature for the birds to bathe in as well. If you are an avid bird watcher, this garden is for you!

Pollinator Garden

Pollinators are a more general approach to garden design. Not only are butterflies taken into account, pollinators which are also essential to our ecosystems are also supported. We us a more broad-brush approach in our plant selection to support the most amount of species possible. If you're looking to support the most species, this is the selection for you!

Prairie Garden

Also known as a prairie corner, these gardens are specifically designed to help restore lost habitat in our suburban environments. We will use the most amount of plant species we can in our design to support as many species as we can, while also attempting to restore the original ecological habitat as best we can with our given options. If you are thinking "ecological function", "ecosystem support", or "habitat restoration", this is the best option for you.

Note: All of these design choices perform similar roles, and many will use the same plants. These categories simply help us customize our designs to our customer's expectations. Also, any "restoration" work in a forest or wetland area will mainly use plants appropriate for that ecological biome.
