Beginner's Guide to Stewardship Gardening: 10 Wetlands for Wildlife with Vernal Pools and Ponds

The final method for adding living water to the Stewardship Garden is perhaps the most intimidating but also the most rewarding. Deciding to add a pond of the following type is best for wildlife enthusiasts. This method involves adding an aquatic ecosystem in a pond, either a vernal pool, a more “formal” goldfish or koi pond, or a naturalistic wildlife pond. Unlike a naturally-filtered fountainscape or waterfall, ponds are a permanent water source meaning they don't just temporarily support aquatic life. This means that ponds don't just offer a source of clean drinking water, they also offer habitat for aquatic life. If native plants are incorporated, ponds offer every cornerstone of the Stewardship Gardening method.
