The second cornerstone of Stewardship Gardening is to provide a source of naturally filtered drinking water. Recirculating naturally filtered water features have the benefit of being enclosed living ecosystems as opposed to traditional water features which are often heavily chlorinated or treated with harmful chemicals, this is a concept I refer to as Living Water, or Aqua Logos. To better support wildlife we must understand our relationship with water and how our modern lives impact our surrounding aquatic ecosystems. Just as our gardens are connected by providing food for wildlife, they also provide a means for wildlife to drink and stormwater to infiltrate into the ground and be filtered before entering our major waterways. Two tools any homeowner can use are rain gardens, or rain barrels (or related storage containers).
